Permika Vancouver

Role: Graphic Designer (Visual Media Coordinator)
Tools Used: Illustrator, Photoshop, Procreate
Duration: May 2021 - May 2022

During my time as a visual media coordinator, I had the opportunity to work alongside a team of five talented individuals on Permika Vancouver’s creative team.

Our main focus was to create engaging promotional content for the organization’s social media accounts. It was a collaborative effort to create content that not only highlighted the organization’s products and merchandise but also promoted events in a way that captivated our audience.

Process

For each project I was tasked with creating a row of Instagram posts constituting to 3 by 1 squares for the organization's Instagram feed and an Instagram story for the event.

As the designated designer for Permika Vancouver's Indonesian food event, "Waroeng", I had the responsibility of creating content to promote this monthly occasion. "Waroeng" serves as a fundraiser for Permika Vancouver, and the pre-order period is anticipated by the organization's social media followers - mostly Vancouver-based Indonesians who crave the authentic taste of Indonesian cuisine. Each month, Permika Vancouver announces a dish available only through pre-order for a limited time. The content I was assigned to create will promote this pre-order period to followers, with an aim to reach as many viewers as possible.

Thus in addition to the Instagram posts and story to publicize the pre-order period of the dish, for "Waroeng" promotions I also created a banner that will be displayed on the pre-order form on Google Forms, and Thank-You cards that will be printed and handed for every dish purchased.
Initial Step
The initial step for every content was a meeting with fellow members of the creative team. Deadlines were discussed during this time, and I was given approximately a week to complete the work before the pre-order posting deadline. This meeting also provided me with details of what to include in the post such as the product name, price, dates of pre-order and pick-up period.
Image crop and edit on Photoshop
After the meeting, in collaboration with other teams such as the logistics team who provide images of the food items, I was able to start the process of editing the photo. I used Photoshop to crop the image and applied filters to enhance the quality of the image.
Content Creation
I then try to determine what kind of feeling or mood suits the image and the food item. To find inspiration, I browse platforms like Pinterest to look for colour scheme and layout ideas. The choice of typeface is also crucial because it determines the tone of the post.

In creating content for two different Instagram layouts (post and story), I adjusted the layout of all the elements until it feels comprehensive and balanced. The layout for an Instagram story needed to be adjusted to ensure that there is enough context for followers to understand the key points of the post while being concise in its smaller format.
Laying out elements on Illustrator
In order to achieve the appearance I was aiming for, I created assets of abstract shapes on Illustrator for the majority of my content. In creating these elements I experimented with different strokes using Illustrator’s pen tool and other built-in tools. I acquired other additional assets from stock photo websites.
Other than content for "Waroeng", I was also assigned to create content for other Permika events and celebrations.
Below are some of the Instagram stories that I made during my time as a visual media coordinator.

Reflection

During the course of my role as a visual media coordinator, I often encounter creative burnouts which left me feeling overwhelmed without ideas. By immersing myself in a creative mindset and drawing inspiration from various sources, I was able to overcome my creative block and produce pieces of content that I was satisfied with.

Working in a team environment has also taught me a lot. As part of the creative team, I collaborated with four other talented individuals, each with their own unique perspective and skill set. Even though we each have differences in design style, I've learned the value of persistence and the importance of working collaboratively.

This experience has taught me the value of teamwork and creativity, and  has been instrumental in shaping me into a more versatile and adaptable designer, capable of thriving in any collaborative environment.
